Michael is an amazing brick sculptor from Nebraska. He received his bachelor's degree in 3D Design (Ceramics) from Wolverhampton Polytechnics, in England, in 1988, and his master's degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1993. He has worked almost exclusively with brick for the past 17 years, using it as both a building unit and sculptural medium.
Artist Statement:
My work is nonrepresentational, it centers mainly around the brick, both as sculptural medium and building unit (although I have also used other materials). In general, I make a connection between the rigid brick and its raw, amorphic material, clay, expressing Brick as a symbol for nature limitation, which is in fact the central idea behind all symbolism. This effect is achieved by carving or placement of bricks, also by the incorporation of landscaping. I often include utilitarian elements, e.g. walls, patios, benches, fountains, partly to reference brick's traditions but also to invite spectator involvement.
A sample of Michael's work is on its way here, and most of his work is done by commission, on a scale from Public Art to private commissions. Please contact the gallery if you are interested in knowing more about Michael's work. He has been written up in Landscape Architecture, Landscape Contractor, Brickworks, Sculpture Magazine, and numerous newspapers and national and international exhibition catalogues. We would be happy to share clips of his reviews and articles which describe his work, and discuss any details about commissioning his work.
