Biography

I'm a second generation artist born 1952 in NYC, schooled in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. I was immersed in the arts as my father was a working artist. Though formally trained, I consider myself "self-taught" having researched most of the artists and ideas that influence my work.

I've traveled extensively in Europe, the United States and Latin America, visiting major museums and galleries, absorbing ideas and theory. From 1985 - 1999, I owned a graphic arts and sign company, during which time I acquired an intense education in the arts and and the art business, from the day to day running and eventual sale of that company.

I now devote myself to the creation of sculpture. My influences range from the turn of the 20th century Russian movements of Suprematism and Constructivism through the work of the Surrealists, the Abstract Expressionists, and now more pointedly to a wide range of artists including Richard Serra, Isamu Noguchi, Eduardo Chillida, Jorge Otieza, Jeff Koons, as well as some of my friends and Northwest contemporaries such as Patti Warashina, Betty Merken, Ulrich Pakker, Geoff Garza, Mark Calderon, Ross Palmer Beecher and Gerry Tsutakawa.

I've worked in a variety of medium including painting, assemblage and collage, but my current obsession is round steel bar, so much so that I wonder if it will be the last medium I'll ever work with. The possibilites for the substance are endless, I'm constantly pushing the limits of this material, using the steel to create sculpture that engages the mind while being harmoniously balanced and visually stimulating.
